The Migrant Workers Association of Lesotho (MWAL) has dismissed the proposed ID-card border entry for South Africa as a superficial fix that fails to address the root causes of the migration crisis.
Executive Director, Lerato Nkhetše argues that switching from passports to IDs is “the same difference,” as it does not grant the legal right to work or study. He warns that without valid permits, Basotho will continue to face overstay charges, “undesirable” status, and mass detention at the Lindela Repatriation Centre.
Mr Nkhetše insists that securing work permits for the thousands of Basotho seeking employment is the only real solution, calling the current 54,000-person quota insufficient.
He added that the proposed Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system is viewed as impractical for unskilled laborers who may struggle with digital requirements.
With South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU) including parties like the DA, PA and Action SA, which campaigned on strict anti-foreigner platforms, the Association doubts the political will to protect migrant rights.
