A 23-year-old man from Ha Tsosane, Maseru has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of assaulting and injuring four relatives.
Sekonyela Moroanyane appeared before the Matala Local Court in connection with an incident that occurred on 15 April.
The court heard that tensions arose during preparations for a family celebration planned by his mother, Manthabiseng Moroanyane. After returning home and finding that others had completed tasks he had expected to do, the accused demanded money for food.
When his request was not met, he became violent, attacking his sister, Nthabiseng Moroanyane, with a sword and knife. He also assaulted his mother when she intervened, and later attacked Tsepiso Matena at his home. A fourth victim, Ntai Mohlokoa, was also injured in the incident.
The court sentenced Moroanyane to one year in prison for each victim, with fines offered as alternatives, resulting in an effective four-year prison term.
