A 35-year-old man of Lithabaneng, Namanyane Mothobi, appeared before the Matala Local Court on Monday, charged with assaulting his sister by striking her on the forehead with the back of a knife. He was found guilty and was ordered to pay a fine of M2,000, which he failed to pay, and was therefore sentenced to two year’s imprisonment.
According to evidence presented before the court, the incident occurred after their father, Napo Mothobi, had sent Namanyane to buy flour. Upon his return, Mr. Mothobi asked him to help his sister, Set’sohlo transfer the flour into a container. Namanyane allegedly responded by telling his father to stop involving him with his children, particularly Set’sohlo, whom he accused of practicing witchcraft.
Set’sohlo then asked her brother when she had allegedly bewitched him, prompting Namanyane to strike her with the back of the knife. Their father and another daughter quickly intervened to separate the pair.
The case was before Magistrate Mathunt’si Nt’sala, with Prosecutor Maqoacha Qhobosheane representing the state.
