The Ex-Miners Association of Lesotho held a press conference in Maseru on Wednesday to air grievances regarding their mine compensation funds.
The association’s Executive Director, Rantso Mantsi, said the Senate had summoned them in recent weeks, where mining representatives were expected to engage with them on payment modalities set to begin next year. While welcoming this development, Mr Mantsi expressed dissatisfaction that only some stakeholders were invited to the meeting, leaving out other relevant departments.
He further revealed that the association had been informed about missing funds that were allegedly paid to fourteen individuals who were not entitled to receive the money. In light of this, Mr Mantsi stressed the need for broader stakeholder participation whenever the association is summoned to Parliament.
He said parties such as lawyers, medical doctors and the Central Bank of Lesotho should also be included in these engagements to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of the ex-miners’ compensation funds.
