Transport Operators Frustrated After Meeting Yields No Clear Outcome

Public transport operators have expressed growing frustration following their meeting on Friday with the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Matjato Moteane, saying no concrete resolutions were reached.

The operators had initially requested to meet with the Prime Minister, but were informed on the day that he was unavailable due to other commitments. Instead, they met with Minister Moteane.

The Maseru Region Transport Operators (MRTO) spokesperson stated that they are still awaiting a decisive response regarding their proposal to increase fares. He noted that another meeting with the Minister is expected next week, after a Cabinet sitting, where a final position is likely to be communicated.

The operators had previously announced plans to increase fares starting May 1st. Local fares are expected to rise from M13 to M23, while long-distance fares would increase by M9 for every 10 kilometres.

They maintain that the increases will be implemented regardless, citing a delay of over two years in fare adjustments, despite an agreement with the government, through the Transport Board, to review fares annually.
