As Lesotho continues to face challenges in issuing passports, South Africa is intensifying the deportation of Basotho found without proper documentation.
According to a report by the Assistant Administrative Officer in the Leribe District Administrator’s office, Mr. Teboho Sehloho, a total of 94 men and women were returned to Lesotho during the Easter period after being discovered living illegally in South Africa.
Mr. Sehloho explained that shortage of passports has not deterred Basotho from attempting to re-enter South Africa, as many are driven by hunger and poverty at home. He noted that some individuals, immediately after arriving at their office, return to South Africa before even reaching their homes.
He further stated that deportations tend to surge during major holidays such as Christmas and Easter, noting that at times, the numbers are so high that trucks are used to transport deportees to the Teyateyaneng office before arrangements are made to return them to their respective communities.
