Church Calls for Peace as Attacks Spread to Bloemfontein

Following the eruption of attacks targeting migrants in Bloemfontein, South Africa, a city located close to Lesotho, the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) has issued a strong appeal calling for peace, compassion and an end to violence against foreign nationals.

The call was made by the Vicar-General and Dean of the Province, the Right Reverend Stephen Diseko, who said the church is disturbed by the circulation of threatening messages on social media targeting migrants living in South Africa.

Bishop Diseko strongly condemned the attacks, saying they undermine the values of Ubuntu, unity and kindness. He stressed that regardless of race, religion or nationality, all people are equal and created in the image of God.

He urged South Africans to stop hostile actions against migrants and instead show love and compassion, saying violence against foreign nationals has no place in society.

While acknowledging the role of authorities in enforcing immigration laws, Bishop Diseko emphasized that such laws must not be used to justify violence, intimidation or threats against foreign nationals.

The church has further appealed for South Africa to remain a safe place for both citizens and migrants, calling on communities across the region to promote peace, tolerance and unity amid growing tensions linked to xenophobic attacks spreading in several provinces of South Africa.
