Senior Magistrate Raises Alarm Over Rising Police Brutality in Lesotho

Senior Resident Magistrate at the Qacha’s Nek Magistrate’s Court, Ts’eliso Bale, has expressed grave concern over what he describes as an “escalating menace” of police brutality and human rights violations in Lesotho.
Magistrate Bale, who has previously served in human rights–focused non-governmental organisations as well as in the military, warned that despite growing awareness of human rights, abuses by law enforcement agencies continue to increase.
He explained that human rights are fundamental entitlements and freedoms inherent to every individual, regardless of identity or origin. These include the right to life, liberty, and security, freedom from torture, as well as the right to equality and justice.
