The Maseru City Council (MCC) has announced that an ongoing shortage of diesel and petrol is disrupting its garbage collection schedule across Maseru.
MCC Public Relations Manager, Ms. Lintle Bless, explained that under normal circumstances, waste along principal routes is collected daily. However, the fuel shortage has forced the council to reconsider and adjust its collection schedule.
She added that the council is still assessing how the revised schedule will be structured. In the meantime, residents have been urged not to dump household waste along main routes, but to wait for their designated collection days.
Meanwhile, piles of garbage have already begun to accumulate along the main road from Ha Matala through Borokhoaneng, where waste has yet to be cleared.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned in December last year that poorly managed solid waste is contributing to a growing public health crisis, calling for urgent action to protect communities and the environment.
The WHO further noted that effective waste management can turn waste into a valuable resource by generating energy and creating green jobs.
