DA welcomes decrease in fuel levy but warns it’s not enough

The Democratic Alliance and the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa have both criticised government’s fuel levy reduction, saying it falls far short of what South Africans need.

Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana announced a decrease in the levy this week, but fuel prices have still surged — with petrol up by around three rand per litre and diesel rising by more than seven rand.
DA Finance spokesperson, Mark Burke says consumers are already overtaxed and argues the real solution lies in cutting government spending.
Meanwhile, GIWUSA president, Mametlwe Sebei warned the increases will hit workers hardest, driving up food prices and making transport unaffordable.
Both organisations agree — while the levy cut is a step in the right direction, it is simply not enough to ease the growing cost-of-living pressure facing South Africans.
