LHWP Skills Training Empowers Communities with Job Opportunities

Residents living near the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) are set to improve their livelihoods after receiving vocational skills training in various trades.

The beneficiaries, drawn from the districts of Leribe, Thaba-Tseka, and Mokhotlong, were awarded certificates on Thursday through a joint initiative by the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Ministry of Tourism.

The training covered a range of practical fields, including bricklaying, stone masonry, roofing, welding, plastering, and hospitality.

Out of 450 participants who enrolled in the programme, 368 successfully completed and passed their assessments. They are now expected to secure employment with contractors working on the project, as well as in other related sectors.

LHWP Public Relations Officer, Mr Malakeng Hloma, explained that while some participants already possessed informal skills, their lack of formal certification had been a major barrier to employment. Through support from the Technical and Vocational Department under the Ministry of Education, they have now received recognized certification.

The certificates are accredited across the Southern African Development Community (SADC), increasing opportunities for employment beyond Lesotho.
