Some Principal Chiefs have called for a transformation in the way King Moshoeshoe’s anniversary is commemorated, urging a move away from traditional gatherings centred on celebration and dancing, and instead focusing on meaningful community development initiatives.
The Principal Chief of Ha Mamathe, Chief Sempe Masupha, stated that he no longer has an interest in attending such celebrations, noting that they often allow politicians to exert influence over the event. He emphasised that chiefs are the rightful heirs of the nation of Lesotho and direct descendants of King Moshoeshoe, and should therefore play a leading role in shaping the commemoration.
Chief Masupha further proposed that individual districts be given the opportunity to mark the occasion through development projects within their own communities.
Echoing similar sentiments, Chief Joel Mots’oene of Leribe said that chiefs must unite in efforts to transform how Moshoeshoe Day is observed.
He highlighted that King Moshoeshoe himself was committed to improving the lives of his people, and therefore the commemoration of his legacy should reflect those same values by advancing the well-being of Basotho in villages and communities across the country.
