Ministry of Health Strengthens Public Health Emergency Preparedness

The Ministry of Health yesterday hosted a capacity-building workshop aimed at introducing and institutionalizing Public Health Emergency Management within the country’s national health system. The initiative includes strategic orientation for senior executives as well as technical training for operational staff on the management and operations of the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC).

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Health, Principal Secretary ’Maneo Ntene said public health emergencies arise from a wide range of threats and continue to pose a major concern across the African continent, with Lesotho being no exception.

She noted that the country has repeatedly faced public health events that test the resilience of its health systems and communities.

Ntene emphasized that this situation highlights the urgent need to establish and strengthen the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) to improve preparedness, coordination and response to health crises.

Meanwhile, International Health Regulations Manager, Khotso Mahomo, said laws governing public health bind countries to strengthen preparedness and prevent the escalating number of public health emergencies.
