Lesotho Prepares for April 12 Population and Housing Census

The Head of Population at the Bureau of Statistics, Mrs. ’Matlokotsi Makoa, says significant progress has been made in preparations for the upcoming Population and Housing Census scheduled for April 12.

Mrs. Makoa explained that although some activities are still ongoing, the census programme remains on track, provided that the remaining logistical matters are addressed promptly.

She noted that census committees have already been established to ensure the smooth implementation of the exercise. These committees include stakeholders from various ministries, government departments and agencies, as well as development partners.

Mrs. Makoa further highlighted that the development and review of census questionnaires, manuals and operational guidelines to be used during the enumeration process have been completed.

In addition, she said training of trainers and supervisors was conducted from February 16 to March 13. Training for assistant supervisors and enumerators is scheduled to take place between March 16 and April 9.

The Population and Housing Census is carried out to provide an accurate and comprehensive count and profile of a country’s population and housing at a specific time. The data collected is vital for evidence-based planning, allocation of government resources, policy development, and monitoring progress towards development targets such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
