Basotho workers employed in factories in Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, and local residents met yesterday to discuss improving relations and promoting peaceful coexistence at workplaces and in the community.
The meeting was convened by Umkhonto Wesizwe representative Siyabonga Dubazana after concerns were raised about working conditions and relations in local firms.
Some Mandeni residents questioned reports that Basotho workers are sometimes arrested by police and later released, and also raised concerns about workplace overcrowding.
A Mosotho worker, Mareabetsoe Mosethe, said Basotho are in the area to earn a living and support their families but are sometimes treated as if they are replacing local workers.
Dubazana urged workers to always carry valid passports and work permits and encouraged companies to appoint both Basotho and local residents as supervisors to reduce misunderstandings.
