The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Director of Elections, Advocate Mpaiphele Maqutu, has resigned with immediate effect.
The newly appointed IEC Commissioners say they received Advocate Maqutu’s resignation letter on Tuesday morning.
The Commissioners are Dr John Maphephe, Pontšo Mamatlere Matete and Dr Chelete Monyane.
They said Advocate Maqutu did not provide reasons for his resignation.
Speaking to the media, Dr Maphephe said arrangements to appoint a replacement are yet to be made.
Advocate Maqutu was appointed IEC Director of Elections on 1 March 2022 on a five-year contract ahead of the October 2022 National Assembly elections.
Efforts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful as his mobile phone rang unanswered, and the reasons behind his resignation remain unclear.
