The Bureau of Statistics (BOS) has stepped up public awareness campaigns ahead of the 2026 Population and Housing Census, scheduled for 12 April next year.
This follows a meeting with publicity committees held in Teya-Teyaneng on Thursday, aimed at highlighting the importance of the census in national planning and service delivery.
BOS Senior Statistician, Nyefolo Seboka, said the census is intended to improve the quality of life for Basotho by providing accurate and reliable data for policy formulation, development planning, service delivery, as well as monitoring and evaluation of population programmes.
She said the data collected will guide decision-making in key sectors such as health, education, housing, transport and employment, while ensuring fair allocation of resources based on population size and distribution.
Ms Seboka added that the census will also provide vital information on demographic characteristics including gender, age, education levels, occupation and disability status, to support inclusive development.
She further said the Population and Housing Census will support both urban and rural development by revealing migration and urbanisation trends, assisting infrastructure planning, identifying underserved areas and assessing living conditions, housing quality and household amenities.
Meanwhile, BOS official, Maabele Mokoma, said the census will gather detailed housing information, including tenure, type of dwelling, construction materials, access to electricity, sources of energy, water supply, sanitation facilities, household possessions, as well as waste and e-waste disposal.
Ms Mokoma has urged the public to provide accurate information to enable government and non-governmental organisations to plan effectively and direct resources to areas where they are most needed.
The Population and Housing Census is conducted to collect comprehensive and up-to-date demographic and socio-economic data on every person and household living in Lesotho.
