The Ombudsman has identified a systemic problem affecting inmates, who are deprived of their freedom in ways that infringe upon their fundamental human rights.
Among the key challenges are delays in the dispensation of justice, an issue in which the office has a vested interest in addressing. The Ombudsman advocate, Tlotliso Polaki says her office aims to resolve these challenges and to support correctional facilities in managing issues such as overcrowding more effectively.
As part of this effort, the Ombudsman is undertaking nationwide inspections this quarter to assess whether all stakeholders have acted on the recommendations issued following the first phase of inspections conducted in 2023.
