The National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, says police are making steady progress in the investigation of the assassination of Marius Van Der Merwe — also known as Witness D at the Madlanga Commission.

General Masemola confirmed that three persons of interest have been identified and one has already been questioned as part of the ongoing probe.

Van Der Merwe was shot and killed in front of his family at their home in Brenthurst, Brakpan, last Friday evening.

He had previously testified that EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi allegedly ordered the removal of a body from a crime scene and called him to assist in cleaning it up — a revelation that may have made him a target.

Masemola says investigations are on the right track.

He further revealed that the National Joints and Madlanga Commission security have been meeting to strengthen protection for officials and witnesses linked to the inquiry.
