Quthing farmers urged to access subsidized seeds and fertilizers.

The District Agricultural Officer, Phamotse Maboee, has called on farmers in hard-to-reach areas of Quthing to join forces to improve access to subsidized seeds and fertilizers under the government’s agricultural programme.

Mr Maboee said the initiative, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, aims to boost grain production, strengthen national food security, and reduce Lesotho’s dependence on food imports and emergency aid.

He explained that organized farmers can send representatives to the district office to purchase inputs, which will then be transported free of charge to local resource centres for easy collection. Fertilizers are subsidized by 80 percent, while seeds and herbicides are subsidized by 70 percent.

Mr Maboee encouraged farmers to take advantage of current moisture conditions to plant crops for a high harvest. He added that the District Department of Agriculture and Food Security will follow up with farmers from planting through to harvest to assess yields and assist with marketing opportunities.

The sale of subsidized inputs for the summer cropping season began earlier this month for mountain areas, while lowland farmers started on Monday this week. The process will continue until January 2026. Summer cropping runs from August to December in the mountains, and from October to January in the lowlands.

Quthing District has over 200 hectares of arable land.
