Taxi Fare Hike Remains in Effect

The increased taxi fare of M17.00 remains in effect despite allegations circulating on social media claiming that the hike was illegal.
This was confirmed by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Public Relations Manager, Mrs. Ntumeleng Nts’ekhe, following reports that some taxi operators accepted the usual M13.00 fare from commuters this morning instead of charging the approved M17.00.
Mrs. Nts’ekhe said the Ministry has not received any court order suspending the fare adjustment, therefore the increase remains valid.
Meanwhile, Maseru Region Transport Operators Chairperson, Mr. Jonase Mokete, also maintained that the fare hike remains unchanged, adding that it is up to individual operators whether to implement the increase immediately or not.
Some commuters indicated that they paid the usual M13.00 taxi fare today and operators did not object, while others reported paying M15.00.
