The High Court judge, Polo Banyane, has acquitted five Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) members who were facing charges of murdering three civilians in Mafeteng in 2012.
The five are; Captain Litekanyo Nyakane, Lance Corporal Khauhelo Makoae, Lance Corporal Sebilo Sebilo, and Privates Tšepo Tlakeli and Thebe Tšepe. They had been accused of killing Thabang Mosole, Monyane Matsie and Pakiso Ntala Letatabe at Ha Motanyane, Mafeteng.
Delivering judgment, Justice Banyane ruled that the Crown had failed to produce sufficient evidence linking the accused to the murders.
The five had been on trial for several years, with the matter experiencing repeated delays. Their acquittal now brings to an end one of the longest-running murder cases involving members of the army.
