Police in Berea have successfully arrested two men suspected of murdering Chief Mpiko Mpiko of Ha Mpiko on the 6th of September last year.
Tšepe Kolo of Kolonyama Ha Rakolo and Thabang Ts’ehlana, popularly known as “Liboy,” from Ha Motsikoane, are also charged with seriously assaulting another man. Investigations indicate that the attacks are linked to stock theft.
Detective Police Constable Tšeliso Paepae from the Berea Criminal Investigations Division said that after receiving the report, police went to the scene and rushed the chief and the injured man to hospital, but the chief later died.
He said men from Ha Mpiko and neighbouring villages went to a farm in South Africa where the suspects kept their livestock, suspecting that they were taking stolen animals there after stealing them. He said when they arrived at the farm, they assaulted the herdsman and killed the suspects’ dogs.
The suspects were arrested at a friend’s home while in possession of two firearms, a 9mm pistol and a .38mm revolver, together with several rounds of ammunition, and they failed to produce legal licences for the weapons.
