Following last night’s celebrations that ushered in the New Year, small businesses operating around Makoanyane Square and the Maseru main traffic circle say they recorded their best sales to date.
Speaking in an interview with the Agency, an upcoming photographer, Mr. Thabo Leisa, said the photography business has in recent times been among the most struggling sectors, as many people now prefer capturing memories using their smartphones.
He noted, however, that New Year’s Eve presented one of the most captivating moments for professional photographers, as revelers opted for quality and professionally captured memories.
‘Last night was different. People wanted professionals to capture their special moments as they welcomed the New Year,’ said Leisa.
He further indicated that the two recently refurbished infrastructural developments, Makoanyane Square and the main traffic circle have become some of the most attractive sites in Maseru town.
He expressed hope that their improved outlook would lead to job creation, not only in photography but across various small business sectors.
On the other hand, meter taxi operator Mr. Lesenyeho Makhakhe described the night as one of his busiest since joining the transport business.
‘Many people chose safety and convenience over driving themselves, especially after the celebrations,’ Makhakhe said.
He added that the increased demand for meter taxis reflected growing public awareness about road safety, particularly during festive periods, and called for continued cooperation between drivers and authorities to ensure safe transportation.
The New Year celebrations attracted large crowds to Maseru’s city centre, with music, fireworks, and social gatherings creating a vibrant atmosphere that significantly benefited informal traders, photographers, and transport operators alike.
