Domestic Violence a Growing Concern in Thaba-Tseka, Says District Administrator

The Thaba-Tseka District Administrator, Mr Tlali Mphafi, has raised serious concerns about the prevalence of domestic violence in the district, noting that it stems from a range of underlying factors.

Mr Mphafi identified socio-economic challenges, such as unemployment, food insecurity, and lack of income, as major contributors to domestic conflict.

In an interview with Mohale FM today, Mr Mphafi explained that harmful practices such as forced marriage continue to occur in Thaba-Tseka. He pointed out that, in some cases, elders within the perpetrator’s family do not view these acts as wrong, despite the fact that they constitute a criminal offence.

He further highlighted that conflict within households often escalates when parents are unable to resolve their disagreements. In many instances, these disputes occur in the presence of children, which can have lasting negative effects on their well-being.

Additionally, he noted that discussions around domestic violence frequently overlook male victims. According to Mr Mphafi, men may also experience abuse but are often reluctant to report it due to fear of ridicule, possible arrest, or social stigma. He added that some women can be outspoken and quick-tempered, which may further complicate these situations.

Despite these challenges, Mr Mphafi emphasized that efforts are underway to address domestic violence in the district. These include collaborative initiatives involving various government departments aimed at tackling and reducing such cases.
