PLANS TO REVAMP THABA-BOSIU GAIN MOMENTUM

The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mantiti Khabo, has said plans to revamp
Thaba-Bosiu are progressing as part of efforts to boost tourism.
She said tourism is a priority sector under the National Strategic Development Plan Two review
extension, with strong potential to create jobs.

Ms Khabo said consultations with local communities are a key starting point, given the cultural
and historical significance of the site.
She added that the goal is to encourage tourists to stay longer at attraction sites to increase
revenue and support local livelihoods.
The initiative is expected to stimulate economic growth along the heritage route.
Ms Khabo said visitor numbers at Thaba-Bosiu increased from 24 464 in 2024 to 25 574 in 2025,
while visits to Maletsunyane Falls rose from 7468 to 8093 over the same period.
She further noted that the Ministry hosted a workshop last August aimed at expanding the
scope of the Thaba-Bosiu National Monument to include other historically significant sites.
Thaba-Bosiu remains one of the country’s most important heritage landmarks, having served as
the stronghold of the late King Moshoeshoe the First.
