Liopelo Tsunyane of Botha-Bothe has been sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment after being convicted of the 2018 murder of another man. However, the court suspended nine years of the sentence on condition that he compensates the deceased’s family M80,000 over a period of two years.
As a result, Tsunyane will serve one year in prison. The court further ordered that failure to pay the compensation within the stipulated two-year period will result in the previously suspended nine-year sentence being enforced.
Tsunyane and a co-accused, Pitsi Mmuso, who has since passed away, were charged with the murder of Maphaleng Nthane of Mahobong in Leribe. The court heard that the deceased’s body was later discovered buried at Sehlabeng sa Sekheleli, with several body parts missing, including the heart, lungs and liver, as well as the skin from the lips, nose and chin.
At the time of his death, Nthane was 24 years old and had reportedly worked as a herdboy at Mmuso’s home for a long period. Evidence presented indicated that a dispute arose when the deceased decided to leave and demanded livestock he claimed was owed to him as payment for his work.
The court was told that it was during this dispute that Tsunyane and his co-accused allegedly devised a plan to kill the deceased, leading to his murder.
