DRUNK DRIVING RISES DURING CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN

Department of Road Safety has seen rise in drunk driving with consistent arrests during its Christmas Road Safety Campaign, which was launched on December 17, last year.
Road Safety Officer Mr. Setsoto Putsoa told the Agency in an interview that although the department is yet to release Christmas road safety campaign report, most motorists were arrested for drunk driving with pedestrians staggering near roads, posing a significant danger to themselves and other road users.
“Drunk driving spiked this holiday season hence action was taken against those who failed to comply with road regulations” he said.
He also reminded that strict laws are in place to combat road accidents, saying they are still working day and night especially when traffic is expected to increase over the weekend as majority of people will be returning to their respective workplaces.
” We urge motorists and passengers to be patient on the roads in order to arrive at their destinations alive” he added.
He concluded by commending Mafeteng motorists for their good behaviour on the roads as only four people were arrested for noncompliance, saying the ongoing campaign is running smoothly in other districts.
Meanwhile the Department of Road Safety is expected to present a report on the Christmas road safety campaign on Monday next week.
Last year’s report on Christmas Road Safety Campaign indicated that at least 38 people died in road accidents, with 226 injuries and the overall number of accidents was 399.
It also indicated that most offences were pertaining to over speeding in that campaign.
