DC Leader Calls for Local Government to Oversee Bridge Repairs

The leader of the Democratic Congress (DC) and Opposition Leader in Parliament Hon. Mathibeli Mokhothu raised a point of order on Tuesday, highlighting the severe impact of climate change across the country. He noted that extreme weather events have increasingly resulted in houses being blown away and bridges collapsing.

In response to these challenges, he urged the government to assign responsibility for bridge repairs to the Ministry of Local Government. He argued that this would allow chiefs and local government councilors who live within the affected communities to report damage directly and promptly, ensuring faster response and repair efforts.

In acknowledging the point, Speaker of Parliament Hon. Tlohang Sekhamane reminded members that the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) was established precisely to respond to such conditions, particularly as the country continues to face unpredictable and damaging weather patterns.
