Lesotho Gains Global Recognition in International Affairs

Written by on November 6, 2025

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Honourable Lejone Mpotjoana, expressed the government’s pride in the country’s growing recognition and participation in international affairs.

According to the Minister, Lesotho has been elected to chair international assemblies or conferences, which is a significant achievement in global diplomacy.

He explained that this is the second time Lesotho has been given such an opportunity — the first time was in 1998, but due to the political instability and events of that time, the country could not take up the responsibility.

He added that this new position began in September this year during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, reaffirming that it will continue throughout the current government’s term.

Lesotho was again elected as Vice President of an international conference on social development held in Doha, Qatar, this week, where His Majesty King Letsie III was present.

However, some members of the public have expressed skepticism, saying that such international recognition does not necessarily change the daily struggles of Basotho, especially those facing poverty and hardship in south Africa. Critics argue that the government has not yet used these international platforms to effectively advocate for or improve the living conditions of Basotho.
