TRC Trains Journalists on Reporting Women’s Rights in Agriculture

Written by on November 6, 2025

The Transformation Resource Centre (TRC) held a training session for journalists on Wednesday this week on reporting issues related to the rights of women involved in agriculture.

TRC Program Manager, Ms. Mabela Lehloenya, said they organized the training after realizing that women in agriculture face numerous challenges that deserve public attention. She noted that although there is a law granting women the right to own land, this right is still not being fully realized in rural areas, where there remains a fear of women gaining control over land.

Meanwhile, Tsebo Matsasa, who facilitated the training, highlighted that women constitute about 80 percent of crop producers, yet only 2 percent are involved in making decisions concerning land ownership and use.

He added that women continue to face challenges such as lack of access to their own fields, limited resources to support agricultural activities, changing weather patterns, and heavy domestic responsibilities — all of which discourage them from pursuing farming as a livelihood.
