The Department of Road Safety has appealed to motorists and all road users to exercise extra caution on the roads during the ongoing graduation festivities, to help curb road accidents.
Principal Road Safety Officer, Setsoto Putsoa, warned that traffic volumes are expected to increase from now through the festive season. He urged drivers to avoid drunken driving and overspeeding, emphasizing the need for all road users to comply with traffic regulations.
Mr Putsoa also advised motorists to be patient and drive carefully, especially as rainfall continues across the country. He reminded drivers to keep their vehicle lights on to improve visibility.
Meanwhile, a report released earlier this year by the Department recommended improving road user behaviour and compliance through education and enforcement. It also called for enhanced efficiency in mobile fine payments to reduce overdue spot fines and promote adherence to traffic laws.
According to official reports, about 300 people die each year in Lesotho due to road accidents, with the government spending over M250 million annually on accident-related costs.
