LCA to Launch Technology-Based Radio Audience Measurement and Expand Media Training

The Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) has announced that starting next
year, it will adopt technology-driven methods to measure radio listenership, replacing the traditional practice of physically surveying households.
This was revealed by Mr. Molupe Molupe, Manager of Information and
Communications Technology and Chairperson of the LCA Cyber Security Task Team,
during a press briefing held earlier this week. He said the new approach will provide
more reliable and efficient data on radio audiences.
At the same briefing, Ms. Mothepane Kotele, LCA’s Public Affairs Manager,
emphasized the need for media houses to stop hiring unqualified staff, in line with
the broadcasting policy introduced by the Authority. She explained that between
January and February 2026, the LCA will enroll the final group of unqualified radio
presenters—those already working in the industry at the time the policy was
announced—into a program at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology.
Kotele said the Authority had initially expected around 30 presenters to enroll, but
over 180 registered, forcing the university to split the intake due to limited capacity.
She added that unqualified station managers had also requested inclusion in the
program and said while they will not join the full certificate course, they will instead
receive short courses and workshops tailored for their roles.
This marks the third consecutive year that the LCA has enrolled radio presenters at
Limkokwing University, as part of its ongoing efforts to professionalize the media
industry in Lesotho.
