DMA explains “Disaster”

Written by on September 17, 2025

The spokesperson of the Disaster Management Authority, Mahlape Koali, has
explained what constitutes a disaster and how the authority determines when
to intervene.
Speaking in an interview with Mohale FM in Maseru, Ms Koali said that while
an individual may report an incident, the DMA first assesses whether it
qualifies as a disaster, its severity, and the type of interventions required.
She added that, for example, if a person’s house is destroyed but they are
employed or work for the government, they do not automatically receive
assistance unless the damage affects many households in the area.
Ms Koali cited the COVID-19 pandemic as an example of a disaster affecting
many people, during which Basotho received support from the Disaster
Management Authority.
