Residents of Ha Ts’osane in Maseru are raising alarm over continuous smoke from the nearby dumpsite, which they say is polluting the air and harming their health.

Speaking on behalf of the concerned residents’ committee, Motlatsi Dlangamantla said the situation has even caused power outages, as electric lines were affected by a fire that broke out at the dumpsite. He added that the smoke has led to health problems for nearby residents, including headaches, chest pains, and persistent coughing.

The fire reportedly started during the night of Saturday, 6 September, at the Ha Ts’osane dumpsite.

Representing the Maseru City Council, Lintle Mosala, explained that fires at the dumpsite are a frequent occurrence due to the type of waste disposed there. However, she noted that this particular fire was worsened by strong winds.

Ms. Mosala said the council is actively working to contain the fire. Measures include fire suppression efforts, distributing face masks to affected residents, and closely monitoring the situation to minimize the impact on the surrounding community.
