Zambia has directed government institutions to activate contingency plans as forecasts point to a drier and hotter 2026/27 rainfall season linked to El Niño conditions.
Lusaka Times reports that Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa issued the instruction during the launch of the seasonal rainfall outlook. Provincial administrations and permanent secretaries have been told to prepare across agriculture and food security, water and energy, public health and disaster management.
The forecast follows regional climate discussions at the Southern African Regional Climate Outlook Forum. Authorities say early use of climate information is intended to reduce disruption to communities and essential services.
