Women Farmers Still Struggle to Access Land Despite Existing Laws

An officer from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship Affairs, Police and Home Affairs, Mrs. ‘Masebele Mponye has raised concerns that although laws and government policies exist to ease land allocation for farmers, they are often not implemented at community level.
Mrs Mponye made these remarks during a meeting organised by Transformation Resource Centre, which brought together various government departments to discuss the state of land rights for women farmers. She observed that chiefs and councillors frequently fail to apply existing laws, leaving many women at a disadvantage.

She explained that in many villages, the current practices of chiefs and councillors mean that women are denied access to land unless their husbands have passed away. Mrs Mponye noted that this situation discourages women from fully engaging in farming and limits their economic potential.
Meanwhile, Mabosiu Selloanyane from the Ministry of Trade, under the Cooperatives Department, said her department’s mandate is to strengthen and expand cooperatives across the country.
She added that the department also focuses on reviving inactive cooperatives and providing training in cooperative management and financial administration to ensure sustainability.
