A United States federal appeals court has overturned an order that forced a Michigan coal-fired power station to remain open beyond its planned retirement.
Reuters reports that the three-judge panel found the US Department of Energy exceeded its authority when it used an emergency provision to keep the J.H. Campbell plant operating. Michigan had challenged the move, arguing that consumers would be left carrying the cost of an ageing facility.
The ruling is a setback for the Trump administration’s efforts to preserve coal-fired generation as electricity demand rises, including from rapidly expanding data centres.
