United States President Donald Trump has said he would welcome a future united Ireland, making an unusually direct intervention in a question that US presidents have traditionally approached with caution.
Reuters reports that Trump made the comments during a visit to Dublin, where he met Irish leaders before attending a golf event. He said he believed Irish unity could eventually happen, while political leaders in Northern Ireland stressed that any change in constitutional status must be decided through the process set out in the Good Friday Agreement.
The agreement provides for a referendum if the British government believes a majority in Northern Ireland is likely to support joining the Republic of Ireland. Trump’s remarks come amid close economic ties between Ireland and the United States and continuing debate over Northern Ireland’s long-term constitutional future.
