US President Donald Trump rejected a request from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for American strikes against Yemen’s Houthis, according to an Axios report cited by Reuters.
Reuters said Axios reported that the Saudi crown prince called Trump twice on Thursday as tensions around Yemen and Red Sea shipping intensified. US officials were quoted as saying Washington does not currently plan direct military action against the Houthis and is trying to avoid opening another front while focusing forces on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Axios report, and neither the White House nor the Saudi embassy in Washington had immediately commented.
