Traditional Healer Questioned Over Fatal Prison Poisoning

Police have taken a traditional healer into custody for questioning following the fatal poisoning of an inmate at the Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) last week.
Two other inmates who allegedly consumed the same poisoned food were rushed to hospital, where they later recovered.
The sangoma, who is from Nazareth in rural Maseru, remains in police custody. His name has been withheld as he has not yet appeared before court. He was picked up by police on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli confirmed the development, saying investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to sources, the traditional healer accompanied an uncle of the deceased to MCCI on January 1 to deliver food parcels to an inmate. It is believed the deceased shared the food with two other inmates, who narrowly escaped death.
The food parcels have since been sent to a laboratory for forensic analysis as part of the investigation.
