Three of the five dogs belonging to Mr Ts’oeu Petlane were put down by a veterinarian yesterday after they attacked and seriously injured a child who mistakenly entered the family’s yard on Tuesday evening.
It is reported that the child, from Ha Abia, had been sent to a home in Ha Matala village but accidentally entered Mr Petlane’s property after dark.
Reports indicate that the property’s electronically operated gate, which is controlled by a remote key, did not close immediately after Mr Petlane arrived home and drove into the garage. The child is said to have approached the front door to knock when the dogs attacked.
After hearing the commotion, a passer-by raised the alarm, prompting members of the household to rush to the child’s assistance. The child is reported to have sustained serious injuries.
Speaking to Mohale FM, a family friend said Mr Petlane voluntarily decided to have the three dogs euthanized in the interest of public safety following the tragic incident.
The report further states that the remaining two dogs will also be put down once the veterinarian is available.
Meanwhile, speaking to Mohale FM, local councilor Mr Mofihli Rarose described the incident as deeply unfortunate, saying security measures at the property had appeared adequate to prevent such an incident.
