admin The Educators Union of Zimbabwe (EUZ) has called on the government to implement a policy framework to facilitate the re-employment of Zimbabwean teachers returning home after fleeing anti-immigrant violence in South Africa.
The union said while the government has already introduced measures to support Zimbabwean learners returning from South Africa, teachers affected by the same circumstances should receive similar assistance.
In a petition to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and other government institutions, EUZ urged authorities to establish a coordinated system to register, absorb and redeploy returning teachers into the public education sector.
The union also called for the recognition of qualifications and teaching experience gained in South Africa and pointed to the government’s 2009 teacher amnesty as a model for reintegrating educators returning from abroad. It said many of the teachers could help address staffing shortages, particularly in rural areas and in STEM subjects.
