Taxi drivers across several regions in Welkom, South Africa staged protests yesterday against the court fines and government policies they deem unfair and damaging to their livelihoods. The protests were sparked by court rulings that imposed hefty fines, some amounting to four thousand rand, for violations of local transportation laws.
In a show of defiance, many taxi operators began parking their vehicles and dropping off passengers outside designated hours, particularly after 9 a.m., to demonstrate their frustration with the current regulations. The drivers argue that the fines and restrictions are preventing them from earning a living and are placing an undue financial burden on them.
The protest actions included escorting commuters to work and then parking their taxis in as a form of civil disobedience. Taxi operators have expressed their willingness to continue these protests until the government responds to their demands for fairer treatment and a review of the penalties imposed on them.
