South Korea and Iran’s foreign ministers have discussed security in the Strait of Hormuz as Seoul considers how it could support safe navigation through the strategically important waterway.
Reuters reported that South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun spoke by telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Friday. Cho expressed concern about regional tensions and reiterated Seoul’s support for free and safe navigation.
The call follows South Korea’s decision to send an inspection team to the Middle East while it reviews possible measures, including military options. Seoul says no decision on a deployment has been made. Iran has warned that participation in military operations in the Gulf would be viewed as support for US actions against Tehran.
