South Africa’s economy contracted by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2026, ending a six-quarter growth streak as manufacturing, mining and trade weakened.
Statistics South Africa data showed mining output fell 3%, trade declined 1.9% and manufacturing contracted 1.8%. The effects of the Middle East conflict, including higher fuel and commodity costs, added to pressure on domestic demand and business confidence.
The weaker result presents another challenge for the government’s growth agenda, with fixed investment also declining during the quarter.
