South Africa Urges Citizens in Middle East to Contact Embassies Amid Airspace Closures and Escalating Conflict

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has urged all South African citizens currently in the Middle East to urgently contact their nearest South African embassies to ensure they are registered and that their whereabouts are known.

This follows major regional disruptions caused by escalating tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. The conflict has led to widespread airspace closures, leaving many South Africans stranded and unable to return home.
According to DIRCO, the situation has resulted in the most significant disruption to global air travel since the COVID-19 pandemic, with thousands of flights affected. Major aviation hubs, including Dubai International Airport and Hamad International Airport, have temporarily shut down.

Meanwhile, DIRCO spokesperson Clayson Monyela stated on X that the department is in contact with South Africans through various communication platforms and that diplomatic missions have evacuation plans in place. He added that different interventions and options are currently being explored.
