Rural Electrification Project Connects Thousands of Households Nationwide

Since last year, the Ministry of Energy, through the Rural Electrification Unit (REU), has provided electricity to 4,876 households, spending more than M280 million in government funds to ensure that vulnerable families gain access to the service.
In addition, with financial support from the World Bank, a further 6,571 households under ongoing electrification projects have also been connected to electricity.
This was revealed by REU Manager, Mr Kolomane Khoarai, in an interview with Mohale FM today. Mr Khoarai explained that according to REU mapping data, the electrification programme has benefited villages in Maseru, Qacha’s Nek, Mokhotlong, Berea and Mohale’s Hoek districts, with Mafeteng emerging as the most electrified district.
He further announced that on 27 February, villages of Ha Lepolesa, Ha Motanyane and Makaung in the Mafeteng district will officially receive project handover, to be officiated by Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane.
Mr Khoarai added that once projects are completed, REU formally hands them over to the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC), which then assumes responsibility for maintenance and the collection of revenue from connected households.
