In a bid to enhance road safety at all times, the Strategist Roadways Health Shield Organization has called on taxi operators to undergo training on first aid and fire extinguisher use.
The organization says the initiative is aimed at ensuring maximum safety for passengers and reducing fatalities in the event of road accidents.
The Chairperson of the organization, Atang Molefinyane stated that recent incidents involving vehicles catching fire and burning beyond repair have highlighted the urgent need for taxi operators to be equipped with life-saving skills. He stressed that drivers are often the first responders at accident scenes and must therefore be prepared to act swiftly and effectively.
Molefinyane referred to a recent tragic incident in Maseru in which a school bus transporting children was engulfed in flames and burned to ashes. He said the incident underscores the importance of carrying functional fire extinguishers and possessing the necessary training to use them.
He further noted that many taxi operators lack basic emergency response skills, a gap that has contributed to the loss of lives on the roads.
