THE ruling Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) is set to lose at least 22 disgruntled Members of Parliament (MPs), allegedly due to their frustrations with “poor leadership” of the party and “bad governance” of the country.
This according to Abia constituency MP, ThusoMakhalanyane, who left the RFP to join the main opposition Democratic Congress (DC) on Friday.
Mr Makhalanyane said a significant number of RFP MPs were preparing to leave the party, accusing its leadership of “arrogance”, “dishonesty” and failure to honour commitments made to its members.
He said many RFP’s members were deeply dissatisfied with the party’s leadership and what he described as rampant corruption within government, allegedly perpetrated by certain ministers. Mr Makhalanyane further accused Prime Minister Sam Matekane of standing by while corruption allegations mounted, without taking any decisive action.
Mr Makhalanyane and Matlakeng MP, MahaliPhamotse, were originally suspended on 19 August 2023 from participating in all RFP activities and from wearing party regalia for six years. They were charged with “failing to protect the ruling party’s interests” after voting with the opposition on constitutional reform matters in parliament on 16 August 2023.
RFP spokesperson, Mokhethi Shelile, said the RFP National Executive Committee (NEC) had not yet met to discuss the re-admission issue, and Mr Makhalanyane therefore remained suspended from the party. He said the suspension was still valid as it could only be lifted by a special conference.
